RAID Help

Hey all, 

 

I'm planning out a new build and this will be my first time working with RAID arrays. 

 

I would like to have:

 

• 2x Samsung 850 EVO 120GB in RAID 1 (Boot drive and applications)
• 2x Samsung 850 EVO 250GB in RAID 1 (Commonly used games)
• 2x WD Black 3TB in RAID 1 (Mass backup and games)

Do I need to have a dedicated RAID card? if so, what ones would be a good choice or does the motherboard (Asus Maximus VIII Hero) support all this?

No, you do not need a dedicated RAID card. However, what CPU are you planning to get / own? That tells you how many SATA 6Gb/s ports you will have.

I was planning on either a i7 6700k with the VIII Hero or step it down to the i7 47906 and the VII Hero

Well, if it's a new build, I would personally go for the 6700K. If you already have DDR3 RAM though, I would go with the 4790K. I did a build with a VII Hero board and it's a very nice board.

 

Either will support your RAID config.
