Alright guys, i need some advice.

I am going to be building a home server, i am looking at the ASRock Z87 Extreme4 for use of it's Intel RAID with 6 SATA ports.

I am going to use this as a NAS for my wife's RAW photography as a archive, and for all of my misc files and such that will be stored on there.

At least 1 disk tolerance is a must, it looks like i will be able to afford 6 x 2TB drives for this setup.

I was looking at putting 2TB WD Reds in it, and running the OS off of a 120gb SSD.

I will be using either Windows 7 or 10 (whichever you suggest for better read/write performance.

I will also be using it for game servers such as Rust, Project Zomboid, etc. (not running at the same time)

I am planning 16gb of RAM and a Core i5.

RAID 5?

Any and all advice is appreciated, on any of the hardware. Will i get decent performance on that RAID?

My budget is about $1,100 -/+

I have my current server with 3 teamed Intel NICs at 3Gb/s and will be transferring those NICs to the new setup.

My old server (Core 2 Quad, 8GB ddr2) will be re-purposed as a Linux server for hosting personal website and transferring my Windows Teamspeak server to Linux.

*EDIT*

Also, would a Core i3 be sufficient? If so, which one? If not, which i5 would be good for my needs? I am a recently converted AMD fan boy who just switched from a FX-8350 to a Core i7 4790k on my new gaming rig and saw the light, and boy was it a bright.

I would get freenas. Its great reliable and easy sorta.(I and others on this forum can help you out) I wouldn't use a regular windows OS use one MEANT for this task.

I would get this:

16gb FLashdrive for the os

SSD for a fileserver

4x2TB WD REDS for storage and redundancy. (or 6x1tb reds in raid 6)

Get an I3 of some sorts

Server MOBO of some sorts

16Gb ECC ram or 8GB Storage is easy so 8gb is fine

I can help you make an exact list later but ATM Im heading out the door.

Just because you don't care, doesn't mean other others don't. Don't be a self-centered asshole. -Thank You a PSA from the people who do not say random shit on the internet.

Xeon

16GB of ram

server OS

Xeon compatible mobo

those 2TB hdds should be fine if there 7200rpm ones

no need for server OS to be on SSD

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

One thing i forgot to mention, me and several other people will be remote desktopping to this system for remote access to the network, so Windows is a must.

Also, server boards and Xeon will shoot my budget in the face, will it not?

I'd rather spend more on storage then on server equipment
