I built my PC in Aug 2011.

PSU: Corsair Gaming Series GS600  http://www.corsair.com/en/gs600w

3 year warranty, so that's gone.

A month or two ago it started to coil whine. Enough to be a little annoying but not too loud. The coil whine only happens when I'm gaming, and even then, not always.

I know for sure it's the PSU: I took off the side panel and listened carefully to where it was coming from.

Question: should I be worried about this?

The rest of the computer:

i5 2500k stock cooler, XFX AMD HD6870, WD Black 500GB, MSI P67A-G43, GSkill Ripjaws 2x4GB, old laptop harddrive

When I build I thought I might overclock, but I never have.

GS PSUs are mediocre - I'd suggest XFX TS 550W

EDIT: If you OC on the GS expect issues - it's not meant for a high end rig

i had the same psu, but when i changed gpu to a 280x from a HD 6790, problems started to appear. I got a new seasonic G 650w psu and it is very good.

Keep in mind that the GS600 from corsair is the "father" of the next gen CX600w from corsair so.... consider changing it

I was thinking about upgrading soon, New GPU and getting an SSD. I was hoping to avoid upgrading anything else so I could budget more for the fun bits.

(I have $100 CAD now, I was going to get an SSD, should I get a PSU instead?)

If the PSU fails, is it likely to damage other components? Or can I just keep using it until it dies?

PSU > SSD - the needs before the wants

if the PSU dies it might take out a GPU, a mobo, a CPU, RAM - anything. GS (and now CX) don't have 100% working protections - sometimes they slip. It happens. I'd say get a decent PSU.

I hate you, okay, not you. I hate that you are probably right.

In any case, for a GPU upgrade at some point I was thinking R9 390, so a bit of a power hog, I want that to remain an option.

Which PSU would be a good choice around $100 CAD?

you mention   XFX TS 550W, I was thinking I might need more power though.

550W is fine for a 390 but if you want, the Antec High Current Gamer 620M is an excellent option, or the XFX XTR 650W or the SeaSonic S12G (same one I use) 650W.

okay, I'll look into those, thanks!

Capacitors dry out -> resonant frequency shifts into audiable rang -> coil whine.

It's rotally save in the short tine, but you should look at the suggestions and upgrade your PSU some time in the future.
