GTX 770 lag

KaplaRecords

Hi, so I have this little problem.

I fineally built a PC, with a core i7-4770k overclocked to 4.2 Ghz and a GTX770 (which I won in a contest more than a year ago, don't judge me).

I bought a Tomb Raider and set everything on max and started playing. Here's the thing. Although the game was smooth at around 50-60 fps, I've noticed a pretty big lag which dissappeard when turning the settings down to medium/high. Fps was about 5 more (nVidia counter), but the lag was gone. I'm pretty new into gaming but I honestly thought that if a game runs at 50 fps, it should work just fine...

A similar situation is with an r9 270x sitting at my girlfriend's computer. She's playing a witcher 3 and although the gameplay is really smooth, there is still a noticible lag. In witcher 2 all I had to do was turning a V-sync off (which I always do).

Is that a normal thing or I do have some problem?

My specs:

MB: Asrock Extreme 4 z97
CPU: i7-4770K 4.2 Ghz

SSD: A-Data SP900 256 GB SSD

RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 16 GB RAM

GPU: Asus GTX770 DirectCU II OC

PSU: Corsair RM850

Witcher 2 is not well optimized - Witcher 3 should be running fine - just use a frame limiter set at 55 fps rather than V-sync.

Tress FX is AMD tech - much like how Hairworks screws my Witcher 3 gameplay over, Nvidia didn't properly fix Tress FX cause reasons. AMD has released the code.

I hardly doubt it but check your VRAM usage and GPU temperatures etc. It could just be the game engine playing up for with your set-up/card though.

770 is still a decent card - in between the 280 and 280X currently

I'd go with 280x cause I actually won a possibility to buy something for up to 1500 zł (about $400) but they didn't have that at the time... but the differance between them is really small.

Ok, with tress FX, post processing and high precission turned off I get around a 90-100 fps and at this point I think the rest of the lag is because of the shitty monitor.

Seems like those 3 things had the biggest impact. At that point I turned tressFX back on since it really changes a look of hair but despite the fact that fps was still above 60 fps (about 70-80), it added a little lag :(

I was messing around with settings before posting but didn't even consider turning tressFX off since I liked it that much.

Thanks guys, you're awesome. That was really quick.. ;)

The only upgrade thats coming is if I win ultrawide festival :P. I would never spend that much on a graphics card. The one I have is only mine because of the contest. In Poland it costs about 3/4 of the month of an avarage person at my age (22) assuming they already finished their studies... ;)

Kek, i have similar issue to yours with my GTX 770 4 gb (gigabyte), but it happens ONLY in GTA V, all my other games (Witcher 3, Witcher 2, Borderlands series, to name a few) it works perfectly fine, so if there's another way of getting rid of this strange lag, other than lowering settings, I would be glad to know.

Btw. @don_svetlio I had 280x (gigabyte one)and not only did it perform worse compared to my 770, but also... Lasted me 6 months, deciding to grey screen each time i've put load that caused it to bump the clocks from idle to advertised. Immediately returned it.

Inb4 gigabyte AMD cards have high faliure rate. I KNOW, back then (~1.5 years ago) i didn't.

Actually - the issue was likely similar to Asus' first revision of the 280X - the VRAM was overclocked too far and overvolted resulting in instability. Sapphire 280Xs are a far better solution and achieve better results than 770s. Asus and Gigabyte (take it from me :D) both favor Nvidia - XFX, Sapphire, Powercolor, Club3D are the brands to go for for AMD.

Could be the case there. Personally haven't seen a 280x that would beat my 770 in games I play, but it just shows how big is the difference between manufacturers when it comes to AMD/Nvidia chips. Like you said, some brands make better nvidia-based GPUs, some AMD-based.

I have even worsse situation since my version has only 2 GB. Make sure that you turn the V-sync off. It looks better with it but a lot of times it really gives a huuuuuge lag. Other than that, i don't know :(. In this case I had to put some settings down :(.

I'd also like to factor in driver optimization - my 3Dmark score has been going up by about 500 points every 4-6 months with major driver released.
