Hi people , someone on a local forum offered me a used westone 3 for around $80 ( after conversion) , which has been used for around 2 years and physically isnt in the best condition ( a small crack on one of the shell) . Is it a good idea to grab it ? I cannot afford to buy anything that high end new so I was thinking this might be the only way to get good earphones .

I say don't buy used eaphones since they could've been anywhere (I was once in a public urinal and seen someone drop his earbuds into the urinal, shake them off, and then proceeded to put them back in his ears .____. ) that and they have a crack in them :)

Generally, if they're high end headphones, and they appear to be in good condition, then the original owner will have taken pretty good care of them. Obviously this isn't the case with these, but they also don't look like they are in good condition, so...

Unless you plan on reshelling them through the likes of Custom Art, or some other such company, you should avoid them. The shell is part of what gives them such good isolation, not to mention that having a cracked shell means that if it rains when you're outside, or you start sweating while wearing them, they could easily get damaged even further.

If you have $80 you can spend, you should go look at Vsonic IEMs. they are well reviewed, and they are supposed to sound quite good.

Hey! New SIgnature!

I'm supposedly a person on the Internet, but you'll never know if I'm human or not ;)

True, but they are also a potential vector for infectious agents... STI can be transmitted through ear wax or any other type of bodily fluid :S
