I'm not aware of any physical changes to the 2.0 standard. I think its backwards compatible with 1.4 at least. Sorry, haven't been keeping up with HDMI since... ever really.

Does the HDMI 1.4 has a noticable difference from the 2.0 software wise. I just don't want to lose any refresh rate, I could care less for the 4k resolution stuff.

HDMI 2.0 just allows 4k at 60hz

I'm pretty sure Display Port and HDMI are identical in terms of the signal, it is just the shape of the connector which means it costs less for manufacturers to implement as they don't have to license the "HDMI" standard.

Just try it and see if it works really - if the specs allow for the same resolutions/refresh rates you should be fine.

HDMI does not adapt to DisplayPort.

Completely wrong :P an HDMI to DisplayPort connection in fact won't work at all.

... I have multiple cables to connect display port PCs and laptops to my HDMI TVs and have used them for multiple years...

You're talking about adapting DisplayPort to HDMI, not HDMI to DisplayPort. Flip that cable around and it won't work. This:

I want to know if I can plug the HDMI side into my PC and the Display Port side into my monitor, while having the latest cables that are out today.

is not possible without a signal converter.

Why not? Isn't it just 1s and 0s?

EDIT: Not making an argument, just a general inquiry.

Think of it this way, any language on Earth is all just the same sounds and syllables in different arrangements. But it's not about being able to make and hear the sounds, you have to have a base of knowledge for what certain combinations of sounds refer to, and that's completely arbitrary, it's just whatever the local society has decided on by agreement.

DisplayPort and HDMI are different signal formats, different electrical languages. Certain sequences of 1s and 0s mean different things. If a DisplayPort input controller isn't programmed to know what the signals coming from an HDMI source actually mean (and they aren't), it won't be able to interpret them.

I know for sure there is a difference between them (sofware wise) I just want to make sure I get the full use of my 144hz monitor.

I remember watching a video saying something like: "If you're using HDMI you wont be getting the full use of the refresh rate."

With that said, silly me forgot that the GPU I picked out on a website actually has a DisplayPort on it. I had only looked at my motherboard on Youtube and thought those were the only ports I was going to get with the build.

You are fucking good at explaining stuff, @Glenwing.

I never read far enough into DP/HDMI and because of a setup I used to use daily I assumed my findings were because the physical shape of the connection was different, otherwise it was the same.

Thank God for the people who actually HAVE the knowledge! xD
