Desktop ethernet trouble

I recently built a new computer, and have recently had trouble making it connect to the internet. My ethernet cable and modem are very new, so I do not think that it is the fault of the modem/ethernet cable. Have I somehow built my computer wrong? Please help, and let me know if you need more details.
