I am going to soon be a first-time Linux user, and was wondering if someone could walk me through what version of mint to use.

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

depends on your computer specs

I might suggest installing linux into a vm first so you can try it out before fully installing it

If you use linux, you will likely have wifi troubles, so if you have ethernet use that if you have it.

Sorry but no. I don't know what version of linux you are using but most modern distros come with wireless support.

The variations are different desktop environments.

Just google the specific version and look at pics. If the desktop looks like your thing then go with whatever one that was.

Sorry but I disagree, one or 2 jinky broadcom drivers doesen't qualify as supported IMO. I have used Ubuntu since 11, mint, Elementary OS Luna, no debian based or redhat because I just don't like them. As fas as wifi cards I've literally had a few of them from bcm9452 - BCM9453.

Maybe if I used Atheros or Railink I'd have better luck, but if you "hackintosh" you use Broadcom. So do most OEMs other than Intel.

Dude. You said you use ubuntu but no debain based distros. Ubuntu is debian based.

This proves that you are just talking out of your ass.

Don't tell him the drivers don't work because they do. They have worked straight out of the box on mint and ubuntu for ages. You are obviously doing something wrong.

You should check if your hardware is compatible, most mainstream hardware is already supported out of the box in the Linux kernel but there are still a few things that might require a bit of work if not supported out of the box. Also if something goes wrong don't give up, keep trying and you will learn over time why things happen and how to prevent them.
