Need help with laptop project

hello, my friend found an old school dell latitude c640 with windows xp on it, and we want to upgrade to windows 7, but it says that we need to upgrade to xp package 2. how would we go about doing so?

Just install Windows 7 as a fresh install using a flash drive or CD.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

does not boot from usb. it is a 2001 laptop. it has only 1 usb port and its not bootable

They mean the service pack.  There are 3 xp service packs.  The upgrade is free through windows update.  SP1 has a green bar at start up, blue for SP2, and red[i think] for SP3.
