Hi guys, first time posting here have been watching linustechtips for years. i have watched the guides on overclocking and have been pretty scared to try:(. i have been building my own computers for the last 10 years. my recent build about 8 months ago i use for streaming a lot on twitch and playing games and such. i am just wondering what to expect from my build. just looking to do a mild overclock to help with frames while streaming to offer a better quality of stream ( i stream at 1080P at 60 fps using xsplit)

Case - Thermaltake level 10 Gt

Mobo- gigabyte gt gaming z97

Cpu - intel i7 4790k with corsair h100I all in one cooler

Ram -  2x8G|G.SKILL F3-2666C12D-16GTXD

Gpu -  2x crossfire  xfx R9 290x DD Oc black edition

psu - E.v.g.a 1200 80+plat

HDD - Samsung SSD 850 pro 512 Gb SSd

Peripherals- Madcatz MMO 7 , and strike 7 keyboard

everything is running stock config at the moment, i was tempted to just use the Gigabyte tweak'er to just to a mild overclock but i am not sure if thats a smart idea from what i have been reading

if i posted in the wrong thread, Sorry in advance

if more information is needed i will provide

thanks

Jay

Set voltage to 1.3v on CPU core voltage. Its 100% safe voltage. Then increase CPU frequency and test for stabliltiy. No reason to be scared of oc.

I'd expect you to hit at least 4.4ghz, even with a very bad chip. Anything past that is a bonus. Throw a vcore of 1.275v and see how far you can go.

I hear 1.25v used more commonly as a "safe" voltage, but temperatures will tell you when you've given too much voltage. I run 1.220v max.

I have never seen temps above 50C, what would be a bad temp?

so would u say run a stability test overnight at 4.4 and see how it goes after i test for 30 min or so?

i do appreciate all the help guys thanks :D im just cautious because i don't want mess anything up lol

Up to 80ºC while stress testing is fine, you can push it a bit further if you want. The moment you pass 80, don't go any further, and if you ever hit over 83ºC, dial down the OC.

I'd try and stress 4.4 for around 15min on different stuff. If it passes, try boosting 4.5 and repeat. Keep going until you crash in one of the 15min tests. Once you do, get the last stable frequency and then test overnight.
