There is literally no functional difference between a Xeon 1231 v3 and an i7-4790 aside from a very minor clock speed difference(and a lack of an iGPU). The performance difference in gaming between the two is negligible.

Is there any particular reason why you want to do so? Are you performing any tasks aside from gaming? If not, you won't see significant gains by going to the X99 vs. the Z97 or Z170 platforms. Just letting you know.

Alright, so let's quantify their differences, shall we? Intel has fairly comprehensive specifications of its CPUs on ARK.

Look specifically at the "Advanced Technologies" section. That's probably where the "consumer friendly features" and "workstation oriented features" are, but I don't see many differences there. Honestly, there really isn't a lot separating the E3-1231 v3 and the i7-4790.
