Was wondering if anyone in Canada has got their hot little hands on one of these puppies yet?

I was going to pick up 3 of them up and found its not for sale on Canadian sites for the android market nor amazon nor bestbuy

Was wondering as well if we (Canadians) got native app support (chrome browser, netflix, youtube)?

Yea $62 for them unless you want to get into the bidding.

Hopefully they will be available here soon. I'd really like one. Don't like hooking a HDMI cable up all the time.

Just looked on Ebay cheapest one I can find is free shipping for about 50 dollars and they go up from there with the average being 75 dollars with 2 days left on bidding.

Think I'll just wait to get it. I don't need one myself just my dad and sister want one cause they both are starting to really hate the boxee I left them.

I want one to see how I can break the thing and root it. I'm sure there's a bounty out on rooting it by now.

They didn't produce nearly enough to cover themselves, so you, and pretty much everyone else, are going yo have to wait awhile for more to get on the market, unless you want to buy one 2nd hand from some guy trying to bank off of the lack of them on the market.

I am in BC and have a chromecast.  Works fine, not quite as functional currently as the Roku 3, but a lot smaller and cheaper so will be interesting to see how it progresses.

All the supported apps (youtube, netflix, chrome browser) work just fine.  Can stream from my cell, tablet or laptop.  I do wish there was an ability to stream from an ethernet connected PC instead of wireless only, but otherwise it's working great.

Taking it on vacation this weekend to Victoria, see how it works in a hotel environment.

So its not quite like the Roku? I noticed no mention of local playing of files either from your network or locally from your phone/tablet/pc/nas. Thats kind of a draw back for me. I guess I'll stick with my HTPC for myself.

I could see this being great for traveling as you are doing. Looking forward to hearing how it fairs in the hotel. Most hotels have super cheap tvs. Some still only have coax/vga connectors cause they buy them by the hundreds.

I'm not sure I've stayed in one yet that doesn't have HDMI, we'll see.

You actually can play local files, by using something like: file:///E:/  or whatever drive you store your movies on a chrome tab

Browse to the file you want to play and click :)  It will play the movie within chrome and then onto the chromecast.  Obviously though this only works with a laptop, not cell/tablet but still works.

The chromecast has pretty much just sat in the TV since it arrived because we have a Roku on each tv, but the potential for it seems pretty sweet.

EDIT:

I just tested and I was able to play a video file from the NAS as well using the method above.

So chromecast in the hotel was a pain in the ass.  I ended up using a hotspot on my wife's phone because hotel wireless is pretty restrictive.  I'm going to try next time with small wireless router to create a seperate wifi in my own room.  The hotel we were at didn't require any landing page to access the internet, but it's pretty common in hotels to not allow connections on their wireless to communicate with eachother.  This way I'll be able to make it work without needing to use our 4G or LTE hotespot :)

That said, it did work, just needed some tweaking.
