Greetings,

I just tried to upgrade from windows 7 to win 10 and i've had a ton of issues. Firstly, Windows Defender is permanently turned off, I cannot turn it on and the only antivirus programme I had in win 7 was Microsoft Security Essencials.

Secondly, when I and open anything from windows key + x menu, nothing happens.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix these issues?

Well first. Have you tried checking for updates for windows?

Also have you updated your drivers to win 10 ones?

Those often fix most issues.

Regarding MSE, if it still shows as installed under Programs and features, then try to uninstall.

Most Anitvirus blocks other similar software from running at the same time, hence why defender is deactivated.

MSE is built in to Win 8 and up btw

Microsoft recommends to uninstall your A/V and any security software before upgrading to Windows 10.

In addition, you have to make sure that ALL your drivers are fully upgraded to the latest version before the upgrade process. They have been found that few drivers which the manufacture fixed, causing problem with Windows upgrade process.

Also, if you used a system tweak tool at some point in time where it modified system files, or you have a malware or virus (they are known to modify system files. Remember that your anti-virus/anti-malware, which ever it is, only removes the infection, it doesn't fix modified system files), then you may want to clean install Windows 10 instead (assuming that your Windows 10 was activated after you upgraded the first time).

Once Windows 10 is upgraded make sure that Windows 10 is fully updated, and so are your drivers.

However, if you want to wait, rumors says that Microsoft is preparing a big Windows 10 upgrade in October or November depending on the rumor, which will be a full OS upgrade. It is said to not be Windows 10.1, it is smaller than this, but bigger than a normal update. We will have to wait and see.
