Possible Dead Parts

Hi, so my PC is finally coming together and I was watching one of Linus's videos where he did the router build with some parts being dead and I heard him mention something about when a part is dead or when it dies, it can take other parts along with it. So I'm kind of scared of dead parts even though I've bought all of my parts under the name of "new" and not "used". My motherboard looks like it has the possibility of being used. Is there a way to test whether it works okay before throwing everything together and having the risk of damaging components?

The only faulty part you should TRULY worry about ismthe power supply, most other parts should be under some sort of warranty.

His parts died becasue A: too much mounting pressure from the heat sink and B: a fan header that supplying power to the board and not recieving it.

That second one is what probably killed some of the other parts

You should be fine

If they sold you something that is or looks very used under the description of new, then verbally slap the shit out of them until they are an emotionless shell of a person that no longer wishes to exist.

You can carry it by a local computer place and ask them to test it. But as long as it was bought brand new and the package was unopened on purchase, then you can calm down. Even for it to be DOA, it is uncommon

I think linus means if you kill a piece of hardware while everything is connected, it has the chance to kill other components as well.

If something is already dead then it won't kill other components.

The board I bought didn't have shrink wrap and the packaging was strange, honestly I think I got ripped off and I think it is used. I called a few places and they said they would need the processor to test it, I don't have spare processors and they don't either.

What places did you call that don't have spare CPUs?

Also, there's very little chance of a dead component killing other components. It can take stuff with it DURING dying, but apart from that... unless you have a really bad PSU maybe.

Seems like you're asking for dox info lol

Um... no. I just find it weird that a place like a computer shop (I presume you called something like that) does not have any spare CPUs to test. Unless you're on a rare socket maybe. Because then I'd say try calling a place that actually has hardware on site.

I can agree with that. I fried a Mobo with a generic PSU with a OC. I thought that i had to build over a new system but the only part it took was itself(The Mobo died only) .

So in short, if  the PSU is crap, the mobo can die. As long as there are no shorts on the Motherboard and everything seems to be in good condition and the CPU socket had a cover, you should be fine.
