I recently purchased a 5960x. I already have a Dark Rock Pro 3 lying around so I was planning on using that to cool it. Obviously I'm planning on overclocking but I keep reading that you really should have an AIO to do anything with that chip.

Obviously the temps will be fine at stock but I was just wondering if people had any experience with air cooling on x99 (more specifically the 5960x) and what I could expect in terms of speeds and temperatures (of course every chip is different). Or if I'm overclocking do I really need an AIO?

You don't really need AIOs. Sure, they'll most likely allow for a higher OC, but you can still very much do it with a good aricooler. Just don't expect ballz to the wallz numbers, it ain't happen. Which you really shouldn't, even if you had an AIO cooler. That's more of a reminder.

(Joke coming) Oh, and remember, this is your best OC tool:
