Overclocking i5 6600k

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

It's all good. So cpu-z is wrong then I think. I'm thinking it's something to do with the way your motherboard reports the voltage data. Also I believe your temps would be higher if your vcore was really 1.5. I can't right now but why don't you do a search on voltage readings with your motherboard and see if anyone else can confirm unusual readings. Keep in mind sky lake is a fairly new platform so 3rd party software on certain boards may not be compatible.

Hello, long time forum lurker here. Hoping someone can help me out with overclocking the 6600k, i'm super concerned i'm going to break something. Just put together the system a week ago and figured i'd give overclocking a try (first time doing it) and i don't know maybe i'm paranoid but something doesn't seem right. Also i hope this is the right section to put this under. I'll go over the specs real quick though.

CPU: Intel Core i5 6600k

MoBo: Gigabyte z170X- Gaming 5

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master 212 Evo

GPU: EVGA 970

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw V 2800

PSU: Ultra X4 1015W (i know it's a tier 5 probably considered lower)

So anyway, after watching Paul's Hardware video on overclocking i went ahead into the bios and set the multiplier to 42 and didn't touch the Core Voltage left it at the default 1.170V and Auto. Everything boots fine but while running Aida64 System stability test and CPU-Z everything is stable but, I noticed that CPU-Z is reporting Core Voltage at 1.6V which seems really high.I did test before i overclocked and CPU-Z did report Core Voltage at 1.520V. Like i said i don't want to break anything and I've never overclocked before. Is this normal or have i missed a step somewhere? I would really appreciate the help.

First off, thanks for the reply adamjp. So I changed it to 1.20 in the bios but pc didn't boot. When I got back into the bios I changed it to 1.25 and fortunately it did boot into windows. Stress testing now so far it's stable (only been 5 mins) but cpu-z is still reporting 1.584 to 1.600v. Temps seem ok fluctuating between 50 and 52c.

well dont leave the core voltage on auto. i would go with a conservative 4ghz on lets say 1.35volts. look if its stable and when it is slowly increase clock speed.

*Edit also i would recommend HWMonitor to monitor temps and voltage at the same time.

Does that motherboard come with software that can monitor your voltages? 3rd party monitoring software can be inaccurate. However, I am concerned that your pc won't boot at 1.2 vcore, though I don't have much experience with skylake chips so I can't be sure of their nominal voltage. It is possible the cpu has a high resistance fault.

If it doesn't boot you add more volts in the bios.

So I changed the multiplier to 40 and the core voltage to 1.375V but still seem to be getting very high voltage in cpu-Z as well as that HWMonitor. I'll attach a few imaged from my bios and the tests maybe there's something i've missed/don't know about that someone else can spot. Thanks again for all the help and suggestions.

It's weird, if the default vcore is 1.170 there's no reason why a manual vcore of 1.2 should not work. You sure that you have the bios set to manual vcore, not adaptive, auto or anything else? How about software that came with the motherboard that I asked about?

Sorry about that adamjp, i've installed the Gigabyte System Information Viewer (SIV). Out of concern i set the bios back to it's default just as a precaution. Just running Aida cpu-z and the the SIV. Running a current test the Gigabyte SIV shows CPU Vcore at 1.128 while CPU-Z is displaying Core Voltage at 1.520V.

You need to make sure you have a good quality PSU from Tier 1 or Tier 2 if you want to overclock, otherwise you are putting unneccesary risk on your other expensive hardware.
