Hi guys,

I have replaced a dodgy Chinese psu after it blew in my aging core 2 duo gaming rig. Money is tight (as you can tell by the fact i still use a core 2 duo) so i need to reuse the psu in it. The psu in question is a seasonic m12ii evo 520w. It is about 4 months old now and was only used for 3 days before the gou fan bearings shot. Since its just been sat in the pc. First of all, i plan on a new build some time next year, probably july next year and this pc should run the psu for 5-8 months once i fix the gpu. Will the quality psu have weard by an ammount that would lead to needing a replacment or can i move it to the new build. If not, would it pay to blow any dust out and put it into storage again until the current pc is is fixed, or should it be ok hanging in the back of the case. Part of the reason i went with a quality new psu in such an old gaming rig is bc i was paranoid after the last one went pop and also i wanted the option to move it to a modern rig in 6-8 months

Good power supplies don't "wear out" that quickly. The four months you've been using it for is nothing. That PSU should last you for a good 3 - 8 years (or more), and you shouldn't dispose of it until it dies of old age.

Just make sure it has enough wattage to run all the hardware when reusing it.

It doesn't even need dust removal bc it only pulled air while it was on (3 days). Its had no airflow for ages so dust buildup is minimal

I have working OEM PSU's from the late 80's, When they were new the average office was filled with billowing clouds of cigarette smoke. I just used windex on the outside of the case to turn it from yellow to the original IBM off white. Never cleaned the PSU. Not planning to either, I think the coating of tar and nicotene might actually extend it's life expectancy:)

Don't sweat the tech
