New Intel NUC Core i7-5557U for photoshop and light movie editing

b00st3d

Just wondering everyone's thoughts on using something like this as a workstation for daily duties as well as light photoshop and light movie editing. I will be putting in 16gb of ram and utilizing a m.2 ssd. The NUC has onboard iris graphics 6100 which from what I have read can even game a bit on medium settings, although i probably won't be utilizing it for gaming.

Here is a link to this particular model:

I don't know the price, and I doubt the price is competitive, BUT I have used the 5200U and the 5500U and both are spectacular processors for nice light loads, so if you are not gaming or anything (light movie editing isn't a big deal.) It actually looks to be a bit closer to the overkill side than the under-kill side.

Thanks. Price is roughly $460 + memory + ssd. I want to future proof a bit which is why i spec'd out the core i7.

The 5557U is still a dual core so it isn't any more future proof than the lower tiered options (unless they sport worse graphics).

I would argue 8GB of ram is plenty.

But please take a look at a more conventional ITX build before buying, just as an example I put together a 3.3 liter itx build that beats that would be more future proof than a nuc, while having dual band wifi, 16GB ram, and a 500 GB ssd included in the 467 USD price point.

CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($102.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M-ITX/AC Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($78.98 @ Newegg)
Storage: Crucial BX100 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($159.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $467.94
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I understand that the extreme small size of nuc devices may be the massive reason you want one, but since this is also small enough to mount behind a monitor anyways I don't really see the value of paying more for less in a smaller package.

For light photoshop/editing it should handle with ease.

Even if you start pushing more complex stuff, it'll still do it, you'll just be sitting around waiting for it to render.

You're right...the small size was another factor. That inwin case is tiny! I was also looking at putting together a mini-itx system, but I couldn't find a small enough case. The smallest I had found was the ncase m1 which is much more expensive than the inwin! Thanks for the additional option!

Longer rendering time because of cpu or gpu performance?

Thanks

CPU. The i3 I mentioned is better in that by quite a bit, but still not amazing cpus. Perfectly capable for ordinary stuff though.
