Workstation: AMD or Intel?

jc980

Current I'm running LGA 775 hardware, and I really want a new system(workstation) to enhance my skills on Autodesk, Adobe, and Programming Languages.

I was decided that I would AMD for the price, since it was more viable and I can fit a relatively modern GPU.

OR go with Intel and not get a new GPU.

The current GPU I have still kicks ass, but it's bottlenecked by the CPU or the socket itself.

Here are the two builds that I mashed up in a budget of 50-60k PHP, which is roughly 1280 USD.

Also ordering online is not an OPTION, customs have been fucking up shit lately, so no.

(Store: http://www.tipidpc.com/useritems.php?username=pchub)

AMD:

AMD FX 8320E

Noctua NH-U12S

Kingston HyperX Fury Red 2x8 GB DDR3-1866

Sandisk SSD Plus 240 GB SATA III SSD

Seagate Barracuda 3 TB SATA III HDD

ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 970 4 GB GDDR5

Intel:(Haswell)

i7 4790K

MSI Z97 Gaming 6

Kingston HyperX Fury Red 2x8 GB DDR3-1866

Sandisk SSD Plus 240 GB SATA III SSD

Seagate Barracuda 3 TB SATA III HDD

Intel:(Skylake)

i7-6700k

MSI Z170 Gaming 3

Kingston HyperX Fury Black 2x8 GB DDR4-2400

Sandisk SSD Plus 240 GB SATA III SSD

Seagate Barracuda 3 TB SATA III HDD

Pre-bought items:(also included in price)

NZXT S340 Red/Black ATX

Seasonic M12II EVO 620W

ASUS VX239H Frameless AH-IPS LED 23" Monitor

If you can make a better solution for me, here are the conditions:(please use the shop link)

8 Threads CPU

16 GBs of RAM

240 GB SSD for OS and Applications

3 TB HDD for Mass Storage

Decent board for either durability or OCing

Any GPU not below the GTX 970 + blackplate (optional, but I prefer NVidia)

Red/Black in Aesthetics(to match the case, obviously and I don't care about the Noctua fan anyway)

It's either I go FX, Haswell, or Skylake. I cannot afford X99 here.

Do not, do not, do not, do not- buy a Seagate 3tb. It's renown for dying in spectacular fashion faster than any other drive. Get a western digital, or Hitachi, or hgst drive.

An 8320e is fine for workstation activities. And since your in Adobe you can use the Cuda acceleration of the 970, so I see no problems with this build.

For mid to high-range CPUs, Intel blows AMD away. It seems you're looking for mid-high range, so I'd go with the Intel-4790k setup you planned. 6700k is more for gaming.

A lower tier i7 will crush the highest tier AMD CPU in rendering and editing by a factor of 2:1 at minimum.

I might consider the AMD build.

Both of suggestions are valid, but I'm ditching the GPU if I do that.

Honestly, the 8 core AMD is struggling in workstations now for what you want as I know from experience.  If you want an 8 core AMD don't go FX for a workstation only go Opteron.  Also, MSI has a high failure rate and from experience I got a bad board.  So, I'm a tad salty about it.  If you go intel go gigabyte for a mobo.

I don't plan to run 24/7 more like 12/7, also Opterons doesn't exist here either.

Z97 boards from Gigabyte or ASUS are already out of stock and removed from the list, they're stocking up for Skylake.

Thanks for the inquiry, but I trust MSI. I still have a LGA 775 board from them, solid for 5 years.(and it's used when I bought it)

For workstation? Yes. Just make sure your PSU is at least 500W and that you're fine with a GPU that often runs at near 100C.

My Seasonic M12II EVO 620W is already speaking "At your disposal, sir" at me.

Hmm get a cheaper GPU then with 4790k or a 4790 non k

and the 9800 GT will beat the iGPU but not much and my iGPU struggles with youtube..

I can't go below R9 390/GTX 970 performance, but I can re-use my current GPU.

Actually, I'd like to help you.

Personally, I'd go with the 4790K setup, because it will be better optimized for your Adobe Suite/programming skills since it utilizes the CPU power threshold. I'm not being a fanboy here, but Intel (especially high-end i5's and i7's) will absolutely murder AMD in your needed performance levels.

I wouldn't go with Skylake because it's not utilizing what you specifically need - it's really built for gaming and lower power consumption. If you're mainly gaming it's a plus, but it doesn't look like that's your main focus here, so go with the 4790K setup.

In addition, the 4790K performs quite well on games when paired with a solid GPU (personally I think you should get a 980) so you'll be good to go there.

Sorry about my dickish behavior in the beginning! It was quite immature. Hope we're all settled out.

The reason I included Skylake is because OCing it is almost the same as the LGA 775 days which I am familiar with.

Thanks for the solid suggestion, but will the my current GPU suffice?

In that case, I would just go with AMD. The $200+ cost difference (here in the US anyways) is not worth it for a workstation.

That was my original plan, I preferably go all out on a balanced system, rather than getting a half of the build done.

Thanks, still considering the Haswell one, but I will come to a conclusion.

4790 = E3 pretty much, and a k version is just an ocable version.

The price difference ain't worth it either.

I would rather get a K processor overall.

He can't buy a Xeon, he has to buy it from a physical shop and they don't have xeons.

Exactly, thank you.

I know.  However, one of his op builds has a 4790k in it.  So, I was saying that he can pretty much have a xeon by going with that one.

"Intel:(Haswell)

i7 4790K

MSI Z97 Gaming 6

Kingston HyperX Fury Red 2x8 GB DDR3-1866

Sandisk SSD Plus 240 GB SATA III SSD

Seagate Barracuda 3 TB SATA III HDD"

This, but I'd get a gigabyte or asus board in place if they have them.  MSI is only good if you don't run into their "dead" as they have high fail rates.

The best boards I know from ASUS or Gigabyte are out of stock and removed from their shop list, unfortunately.

That Gaming 6 board is the only decent one I know.

Yes but he wanted a Xeon because of the price.

If that processor only existed here I would probably already went with that, but with that said it doesn't.

Therefore it's out of the question.

----------------------------

Thanks for all the great suggestions.

The Skylake one is eliminated.

My choice now is either Haswell or FX, will the GTX 970 make a difference in my Autodesk applications?

I appreciate this, but I can't order online.

I need to buy locally and Xeons doesn't exist here.

I would be grateful if you can refer to the shop link.

Thanks.

I being straight foward here, if you can't help, just don't post or get out.

I have a tendency to be hostile because of my health.(I am nearing High Blood Pressure)

So please understand and forgive me for my actions if it seems unpleasant.

I'm sorry again if I made you uncomfortable.

** Rest of post deleted for brevity **

First: Just because you have high blood pressure does not give you the right to be rude to other people. You need to read the forum rules and abide by those rules.

I am handicapped, but that does not give me the right to be rude to people in this forum. Just saying...

Second: When people post a computer build in this thread, they are giving you EXAMPLES to work from.

We cannot do the ordering for you. Just pick one of the examples, then order from that website by following the list of computer components to get the best computer build possible.

First of all, how can that be rude.

I'm telling a person to get out if he can't help or not.

I know it's wrong to reply to dick/douche posts, but I just can't stand it.

I used the store as a reference list, NOT an ordering platform. It has all the parts that are available in store.
