Heatsink without fans

I want to get a heat sink and put on my own fans on it. Does the heat sink matter?

 

As in if I get a nh-d14 or some other heat sink will it make a difference if I change the fans to better ones anyway?

 

How much difference will there be in performance?

 

What heat sink do you think looks the best, for use with either corsair fans or ap15 fans?

I think you've missed the point he doesn't want passive he just wants to buy a heatsink and change the fans

and yes you can change the fans on a heatsink easily and I think the best looking heatsink is the silver arrow but thats just me

Is there a large difference in between heat sinks?

 

For example, will an nh-d14 perform better then a Primotech Megahalem if they have the same fans?

Sicne you want your own fans, I guess you are going for a quiet build? If so, I highly reccomend you to have a look at the bequiet dark rock coolers. They are very good and the fans that come with them are excellent and VERY quiet. When you go with a cooler that has good fans bundled with it, you are getting more for your money, because then you aren't paying full price for the fans.
