So I am at school using their computers and I am wonder if my computer at home is better. These computers use Maya for 3D animation. Unfortunately I don't know what their graphics cards are but They are either a Quadro FX1800 or an FX580. I have an hd 7950 at home. Which one would be better at rendering in this program?

Wow you guys are lucky. We get forced to use inventor on core 2 duo's with 2GB of ram and integrated graphics. For some reason even the school library(web browsing and word processing only) has better and newer computers than the CAD suite. Talk about misallocation of resources.

prolly the 7950 but what cpu

I would be more concerned with your cpu if you're using mental ray or any of maya's standard rendering options rather than a gpu unless you're using a gpu-based renderer like iRay or v-ray rt.

The Cpu for the School's computers is an I5 3450 and mine is an fx 8320E

Yours. Most programs centered around rendering often infinitely scale the rendering work to separate cores (ex. Blender)

Is that a college? That seems like fairly old hardware they got running there.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...
