R9 290 is quite a bit more powerful than the 380 but the Asus version is abysmal. The 290 is slightly behind the 970. The R9 390 is slightly better than the 970 but has more than double the usable VRAM (3.5GB on the 970 and 8GB on the 390) I'd suggest 390 if you can afford it. It's usually slightly cheaper than the 970.

AMD's current CPU line-up aint' good for gaming. For editing and rendering they work as a cheap solution bot not for gaming.

Either get the i5 4460 + H97/B85/H81 motherboard or the i5 4690K with a Z97 board. Anything inbetween is pointless really.

i5 4460 is Haswell Refresh meaning *97 chipset.

B85 is business class and typically will work. Sometimes may require Bios Update

H81 needs a Bios Update but after that it works with the i5 4460 and other HR chips. Most boards come with the Bios updated now but some still don't
