Nvidia recommends minimum a GTX980.

But for 2k you can go with GTX980Ti / Furry X, or GTX 980 SLI / 390x CF as well.

A good quadcore is also sufficient.

EDIT: Your prices looks higher than expected. 980 SLI is not an option.

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil

I'd recommend either a 980ti, or crossfire r9 390s - the 390s will give you more performance, but not all games support crossfire and there are a few stability issues you may come across with that solution, not to mention the extra heat and power consumption. No need to bother with 390Xs, at that resolution 390s will be plenty.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

i'm leaning towards an amd but nvidia has the thing where you can do 1 gpu for each screen

Yeah, most AAAs have cf support, it's the indies I'd be worried about. As for the heat, it won't be damaging your components, but in summer your legs might get a bit sweaty... and that's about it. It's not a huge deal, just something you need to be aware of.

I'm pretty sure AMD will also have a CF support for VR.

Also an mATX board gives you much more features at the same price than mITX usually.

A single 380X and a GTX980Ti produces about the same heat.

CF/SLI on the other hand doubles the heat output obviousely ;)
