Help finding laptop wireless card

Hi,

I have an HP Envy dv6, and the wireless card in it recently died.  The old card is and Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 and i need some help finding a replacement card.  I've been looking at something like the Intel Centrino Wireless AC 7260 or the 8260 and I was wondering if one of these would work in the computer since the old card was wireless n.  Please let me know if I can use a wireless ac card, and if you can please give me some suggestions on what I should get.

Thanks for the help!

these wifi card uses the PCI-E so-dimm slot

so you need to look for PCI-E version

the newer wifi comes either in PCI-E or NGFF aka M.2

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Be careful HP might be using wifi card whitelists like lenovo,

Its easiest to just get the identical replacement part or just risk it with anything close.

If your BIOS has a whitelist on it then installing anything but the HP approved part with an HP part number on it will likely get a boot time lockout.

If you have your exact model number then I can try and look up the service manual and get the list of compatible cards.

Choose from the following,

HP ENVY dv6-7200 Notebook PC series
HP ENVY dv6-7200 Quad Edition Notebook PC series
HP ENVY dv6-7200 Select Edition Notebook PC series
HP ENVY dv6-7300 Notebook PC series
HP ENVY dv6-7300 Quad Edition Notebook PC series
HP ENVY dv6-7300 Select Edition Notebook PC series

you might be limited to getting a similar card instead of the newer AC

Looks like according to the service manual your stuck with an exact replacement. (I think you may even need to purchase it from HP or it must have the HP spare part number on it as they may even block identical hardware that lacks the OEM serial number checking garbage)

The mfg has no real incentive to update the whitelist to support the latest adapters. As a consolation prize the replacement is cheap 10-20 dollars on amazon it seems. Be careful those 3rd party resellers seem to be mixing up the product numbers and list an RAlink as the intel card's number.

In the past it was possible to do some BIOS hacks to change the whitelist but with UEFI and secure boot signing stuff and all that new stuff it might be much harder and more likely to brick your laptop completely if you screw it up. ( http://airodump.net/hewlett-packard-bios-hacking/ )(I don't think that guide works anymore and I wouldn't recommend risking it even if it did still work)
