My $50 Macbook!

I was searching on Craigslist for a Laptop, I found this guy, selling 3 Macbooks, a 13 Inch Macbook White, A 15 Inch Macbook Pro, and a 13 Inch Macbook Pro. He wanted $260 for the 15 inch, 210 for the 13 Inch Pro, and 180 for the 13 Inch White.

I figured it would not hurt to offer him $50 bucks for the Macbook 13 Inch White.

Our Conversation:

Me: "Hi! Would you be willing to sell your Macbook 13 Inch White for $50?"

Seller: 'What will it be used for?"

Me: "For College."

Seller: "It is yours. Can you pick it up tomorrow?"

I was like wow.. It's a late 2009 model, I put a 120GB OSC Arc 100 SSD in it, it is running Mavericks and Windows 10.

I don't know why he had three Macbooks or why he sold it for $50 bucks. Seem sketchy. The freaking copy of windows was more than I payed for the laptop! Made me happy that I got it :)

The plastic MacBooks, one of the few pos products Apple should never have released (or that no one should have ever bought). But for $50 that's pretty good.

I still ill have my 2007 15" pro and it's still great, although most trade in sites offer like $30 iirc, so that's probably why he would take $50.

It has been working well for me, Why do you say it is a POS? I have seen zero problems.

In my city, a Macbook of its age and condition sells for well over 200 in a retail environment and used 200 is not unheard of. Portland: Land of rich hipsters.

Because I don't know a single person who managed to make theirs last for more than a couple of years before it died and/or fell apart. The unibody plastic Macbook was certainly an improvement over the original, but even still.

it is not a uni-body :P

Unibody Macbook > non unibody

P.s. don't put yosemite on it (I don't know about El Capitan). It runs like shit on my 2007 MBP (anything before Mavericks, and I believe including Mavericks runs much better).

Ok, Maybe Mavericks. I don't know how to get it. It is no longer in the app store.

There are two ways of getting past versions:

  • Torrenting the .iso
  • Finding someone with a Mac who downloaded Mavericks (or anything before it from the app store, not that much useful stuff was added that would likely affect you).

I'd also suggest picking up 4gb of RAM if it doesn't have that already.

Agreed. Yosemite lags and stutter, even the animation like half the time isn't smooth on my newest Macbook pro 13inch with the force touch.

That shouldn't be the case. Yosemite shouldn't be causing you issues on a new Mac (my 2013 rMBP has no issues w/ Yosemite).

Yosemite is kind of a memory whore, so do you have a bunch of stuff open when it starts to stutter/lag (and only 8gb of Ram)?

Not really. Applications open fast but I feel like that is mostly the case of the super fast storage. Things like the side notification scroll isn't smooth, transitions animations isn't smooth, Finder scroll stutter from time to time. My Macbook is not slow in any sense, but I just remembering Macs being a lot more smoother than this.

I do have 8gb of RAM, but that should be way more than enough as I run like 2 apps at a time MAX like One Note and Safari. Also, the lag goes away when I turn the transparent animation off. But I turn it back on anyway cuz its so pretty :D

Really can't wait for El Capitan, the promised speed boost sounds really nice.

I think it'll run fine on a Core 2 Dou, 4GB Ram and a SSD

Yeah, my 2007 mbp still works great, the only reason I replaced it was because it kept crashing since there was literally no free memory to be used (I'm kind of a heavy user -- I'm usually sitting at around 14-15gb).

How's it run, slow fast average? I'm looking for a laptop for when I'm on the go and want to edit photos in a small form factor device and macs have great quality, but the MSRP is bullshit. Although Apple seems to have gotten it together and lowered the MSRP for the 11" to $899 I think.

Sounds about what I had expected, I was considering getting a used one, there was a late 2011 one with an i7 for $450, but I don't have that money right now. I may end up getting a cheap windows laptop, I'm mainly just running adobe lightroom and doing file transfers.

Yea i've been looking it up, and a lot of people are reporting the same thing. It could be how the OSX power saving feature works, lowering graphical demanding animation to save power. Either way, I'm happy with my MBP; the battery and the screen is insane :D
