difference between a dac and a usb audio interface

Hi,

I was wondering what the differences between a digital to analog converter and a usb audio interface are.

I was originally thinking about purchasing a DAC. But someone suggested that getting a DAC just for my headphones would be a waste of money.
He told me I would get a greater value out of my money getting a USB audio interface like the Focusrite scarlett solo.

A DAC only converts digital audio into analog audio and outputs it to your headphones.

An audio interface can do that, but it usually also has outputs for speakers, and XLR/Line inputs for microphones/electric guitars. Also an audio interface attempts to manipulate audio with accuracy and neutrality - it doesn't add color to the sound or otherwise boost certain frequencies.
