I hate laptops and they seem to know it, because another one has died under my supervision.

First it was just sitting idle and restarted for no reason and booted to a 'Can't find a boot device' screen. Went into the BIOS and the HDD is no longer there....

I'm guessing that the hard drive is failing because I cleaned the HDD connection pins without any luck.

Now it's basically in limp mode.

It boots up slower than Christmas but eventually does the 'Fix Windows or Start Normally' screen, and currently it's been running the Startup Repair (for 20 minutes) with nothing happening.

Yeah it must be the hard drive, I just force restarted it and now it reached the 'Starting Windows' screen and looks like it won't get past that. The HDD is just sitting there doing the same sequence of tapping sounds, so it's not actually reading anything like it's supposed to.

TL;DR: Watch the GIF.

The SATA connection has gold pins, I just grabbed a pokey thing and cleaned them up a bit.

Didn't do anything to help, but you never know.

Laptops are basically impossible to fix, so it was the only thing I really can do.

Sounds alot like the HDD dying. Get a Sata to USB conversion kit and try getting all the data of it should you still need something.

Germany is awesome lol

Thankfully I don't need to recover any data, I'm just in a motel room and only depending on it to watch DVD's.

I do have a second HDD at home but I'm away at the moment, it just means I won't have any entertainment I guess :P

The thing that makes me mad is that at home that laptop worked just fine for hours on end, and not literally TWO HOURS after I'm using it away from home, the damn thing dies.

If only you knew what's going on in germany right now ....

I feel you man. You get kind of upset when that's happening. I bought a cheap ass Desktop once from a store over here and it had a HDD failure like 2 weeks after I bought it. Ridiculous.

Wow yeah, that's bad. It seems like there's a correlation between cheap computers and their life expectancy, particularly brand-name pre-built desktops and laptops.

The only computer I know of that bucks the 'cheap is crap' trend is the ASUS Eee PC, secretly they're actually alright. Very slow at the best of times, but smaller than a full-size laptop and still useable. Nothing wrong in terms of reliability either.
