Go to solution Solved by Streetguru,

Well you'll want ECC memory, and apparently the G3258 supports ECC

You'll also want a USB drive to boot freeNAS from

It's literally a normal desktop with more storage, and usually runs some form of Linux or Windows Server.

Depends on your uses. How many people are going to use this server? Is it just a home server or something being used in enterprise? Providing information like this and more will help us in assisting you.

I've have had desktop pcs working as servers for years, 24/7 and server hardware also.

Depends on your budget.

Basically right now I'm not making one I just want to learn how to make one, different kinds like a desktop pc server and a big server like LMG uses.

You need something with a video output at least, the G3258 has an iGPU, and you'll have to look for specific Xeons with igpus.

Or just buy a pre-built box

Or something like:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859106531

But you'll need to buy another 4gb stick of RAM with the lenovo above

you said the 2nd one is their network rendering rig what is that?

It's where they do their rendering, instead of on a local machine they have that giant beast to render videos
