Hey everyone,

I'm leaning towards this not coming to fruition.  So if you're pressed for time definitely prioritize someone who is actually doing a build right now. (Maybe revisit when you have spare time)

Being new to LTT and to learning about tech in general I just wanted to challenge myself to see if I could generate a list of compatible parts. After all was said and done I stumbled across pcpartpicker looking to compare some prices.........It checks compatibility for you  =/   (How reliable is this?)

A few amendments happened and here is the result

1. Budget & Location
St. Louis, MO, USA
$300-$500

2. Aim
Gaming above min settings, perhaps streaming.   Cities: Skylines, Train Fever, CS:GO, Gal Civ 3.

3. Monitors & 4. Peripherals

I've got basics that would work for this already.  Would stick to one monitor.

5. Why are you upgrading?
I would want to because I currently run on a stock K55N laptop. I did swap the memory for 2 x 8G Crucial DDR3 1600

Games such as Skylines/Train Fever slow down significantly as they progress.  CS:GO takes forever to load/enter a match. Gal Civ 3, I can play it as long as I stay zoomed out so the anomalies/asteroids etc stay as icons, Zooming in makes it unplayable. I also play others than I wouldn't mind cranking up above min settings on, but no specific issues.

Here is what I came up with:

Gigabyte GA-F2A58M-HD2 FM2+ mATX AMD Motherboard                          - $ 26.96
Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 8GB DDR3-1866 PC3-14900                                  - $ 46.99
AMD A10 7870K 3.9GHz 4 Core FM2+ Black Edition Pro                               - $129.99
                                                                                           Tax                                 - $ 19.62
Hitachi Deskstar 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive                                - $ 42.90
Sapphire Radeon R7 250X 1GB Video Card                                                       -$ 89.99
Corsair CX 430W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply    -$ 39.99
                                                                                              Shipping                      -$  3.99
                                                                                               Total                           -$  400.43
                                              Addendum1            Return Laptop RAM                -$ -93.17
                                              Addendum1                              Total                      -$ 307.26

Some notes
I have a case already sitting with a corpse in it. I've read that this APU and graphics card will do Dual Graphics which seemed interesting to me. I went with a HDD for extra capacity and cost considerations. However, I've never used anywhere near even 500G on my current system so I think I would partition it to optimize it a bit.

So I'll leave it to you guys for your input.  (My first ever attempt, be gentle)

Thanks,
Cinders_Knight

Dual graphics is fairly useless overall, too many issues to get it running well.

So ya just get an APU with 2400mhz memory, should be fine, even better with a solid cooler on it. Should run the games you're looking at there relatively well, mostly it sets up your CPU forever until you get enough for a higher end GPU.

You could save a bit if you don't want to go ITX, but ITX is rather nice to have IMO.

Cooler should fit in the ITX rig

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

The 8320E is a great processor for multitasking (streaming) and the 750 ti will run those game's just fine. I mainly built this list so that you have a upgrade path so you can throw in as powerful of GPU as you want in this system in the future with no issue.

I have the 7850k and I love it. It plays BF4 26 to 30 fps at 1080 medium and 720 at 60 fps. It plays Crysis 2 and 3 but my favorite game is CSGO.

I would check out the 68 chipset boards, Mine is the MSI A68h that came free with the APU at microcenter for 109. Annandtech has a great review of the 7870k with benchmarks from just the APU, dual graphics, low medium and high end dGPU's up to the gtx 980 and R9 285.

I am still undecided weather to get a used R7 250 for 30+ bucks for dual graphics or get a gtx 770 which also work great. I would need to upgrade my PSU for the 770.

If you go with an MSI board make sure it is the V2 model. It is an upgrade to handle the 7870k, also the 7870k has an awesome cooler.

I know dual graphics works with the r7 240 and 250 with DDR3 mem, don't know about the 250x. I went with 2133 mem. Jaztwocents has a great youtube review of the 7850k also and he was shocked how well it preforms even with a gtx 770. I am looking for a used R7 250 for around 30 bucks or so but there is no rush. This things does great with every game I have thrown at it.
