Don't worry about it if you do it only once in a while.  It's better to use something that is designed to clean optical glass, visit your local optician and buy a small bottle of the eye glass cleaning solution they sell. And try to avoid getting fingerprints, dust, water, etc. on your lenses.

Steps for cleaning your lenses

  1. Use a blower first to remove any particles that could act as an abrasive when you wipe your lens with a microfibre cloth.  Often using an air blower to clean your lens is enough.
  2. Dab a bit of the cleaning solution onto the cleaning cloth.
  3. Wipe gently.
  4. And do not reuse the cleaning cloth too much.  Replace them regularly.

EDIT: cheap place to get microfibre cloths: your local optician.  Camera stores will sell you a piece of MF cloth for $5, the optician might give you one for free or sell you one for $1 (this is true for me at least in Switzerland).
