need raid advice

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

So I have been planning a server build for a little while, looking at using the ASUS Z10PA-D8 board, which is capable of RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10, I going to add an ASUS 3108/16 RAID card, which is also rate for RAID 6, which is what I was planning, as I want to put 6 WD reds together, as well as a RAID 1 for the SSD's for the OS, I assume as I am adding in the RAID card, even though the board can't do RAID 6 alone, I'll still be able to do it right?

Hey there Yatys 93,

You should be able to to what you are planning to. Just make sure yo check the manuals of the motherboard and the RAID card for the proper settings and boot configuration. WD Red drives should be great for this purpose. If you plan on adding more drives and also plan on exceeding 8 drives in one pool, I would recommend looking at WD Red Pro drives: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=CAv51o

Feel free to ask if you happen to have questions :)

So to clarify, you want to plug the 6 WD Reds into a RAID 6 on the card, and two SSDs on RAID 1 on the mainboard. Is that correct?

awesome, I will more than likely have questions when I start the system :P and I know I won't be using more than 6 as the case I am using only fits 6 drives :P
