Windows 10 activation

Oh shit. Here we go. So today a little text popped up on my monitor telling me to activate windows.

I installed Windows 10 on the release day with a fresh install. I had windows 8 before and didn't enter a key.

Is there a way to generate a windows 10 key from my windows 8 key or am I fucked?

Do I need to reinstall windows 8 to upgrade to windows 10?

"No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted." I think that the problem is that I have a windows 8 key for windows 10.

you will have to reinstall 8...upgrade to 10 from within windows

then after that..do the clean install

No, I was too impatient. I did a clean install right away.

This. Activation is now tied to MS account and not CD key so you have to upgrade once and get the activation linked to your account then it's automatic on subsequent installs.

I can't just call microsoft and they'll give me a new key and destroy my old one?

Nope, if you ring them they'll tell you they don't support phone activation of Windows 10

Aaaah, this is a mess. What happens if I don't activate? Can I run this machine for a couple of lazy weeks?

Really not sure what happens with Win 10. You'll get no updates for certain and I'm pretty sure some customisation stuff is locked.
