Windows defender disappeared

My Windows defender on my Windows 10 just suddenly disappeared with no reason at all, when I try to open it, it flashes a dialogue box then quickly disappeared also. Can anyone tell me what to do?
Sidenote: Who can suggest me some free good anti-virus software for use?

Avast, AVG, just not BitDefender. I had it and it lagged my PC like crazy. I use Norton and it's great :) Haven't had a virus in a decade...

I heard that Norton is not compatible with windows 10, plus I don't have the money, I'm just a student...

Really? Huh. Quoting Norton support website: "Your Norton product will work on Windows 10 as long as you have the latest version installed." I don't know then...

And most antiviruses have free versions, or at least a free trial.

Uh yeah I'm sorry, it is compatible again in a recent patch, but I'm still seeking for a long-term anti-virus solution, free-trials just aren't my thing... Thanks for the suggestions though, they are much appreciated.

I've used Norton for many years, and it's great... used to be a drain on system resources, but in recent years it's become second only to BitDefender (which is a massive resource hog)

No problem. AVG has a free version which is supposed to be decent BTW.
