i recently got a used "gaming" pc from a guy. it has a gigabyte ga-965p-ds3 motherboard. intel pentuim D 950 cpu. some coolermaster cpu cooler (i dont know what its called.) 3 gigabytes of DDR2 ram. a nvidia 6800 256mb graphics card. and a 300 gb hhd. ive tried minecraft on it but it is really glitchy, i dont know if it is the poor quality mouse or the motherboard or just the whole thing in general. but i am looking to upgrade this pc to be a decent ddr3 gaming pc. are there any recommendations on what to get? maybe a list from pcpartpicker.com?

to move to ddr3 you will need to switch mobos and with that switch processor as well

if you give us a budget we can probably put something together for you

i realize it would need a new motherboard and cpu. but i can re-use the case(even tho its ugly. i can get a different case later), cd-rom drive, and hhd. im looking at about 400-500 for the build. and maybe another 100-150 for a gpu.

Honestly, I would just swap out the CPU for a core 2 quad as your motherboard can take it and get 8gb of RAM which will be fine for almost everything for the next 5 years or so. If you have 150 the 750ti gtx is a great card; especially if the other guy had around a 400w power supply in it.

i do have an extra 850watt psu. so a 750ti? i would really like a new motherboard and cpu. amd would be fine

Yeah I wouldn't use that. The PSU is the most important part of a system and the only thing in a system that can fry everything if it goes out and that PSU looks and probably is very cheaply made. I hate to have to be the guy to tell you this but very little of that system is usable for a gaming rig only the hard drive and maybe the case depending on what it is. Here is a nice list  http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zyzb99

wouldnt an FX-series amd cpu be better than an athlon?

That PSU is better then anything I have owned. Your only issue will be Vid card connectors.

I main gaming rig is a 7850k barefoot with an old SATA had and an old case with an EnerMAX 450 watt PSU. I bench tested it with a 220 watt unit from an old emachines unit. That PSU probabllly will last another 30 years. My total budget was under 200,

The fx 6300 is a lil better then the athlon 860k. However in single threaded games the 860k is a little better cause the cores are like 10 percent faster.

Frankly with your budget you could get anything you want and have cash left over.

I used to collect old computers so I discount most of the PSU stuff I hear.

Get the Xeon 5000 Sequence 771 socket and mod it to 775 (http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/) you got notthing to lose and your motherboard supports everything if it does support core 2 duo and core 2 duo quad it does support the 771 Xeons because thay are cheaper run on 2.6 - 3.0 ghz quad core and what the heck eh you might even find yourself one with threads i'd suggest you look arround on Ebay lots of cool stuff to expand the life of an 775 socket system old hardware really rocks...

Intel 500 Sequence:

http://ark.intel.com/products/family/28144#@

And add a grapichscard with the rest of the budget it will barly bottleneck the Xeon 771 just dont go too overkill 2GB DDR5 and a mid range GPU...

Well ram is probably gonna be more expensive if you wanne get your hands on 4-8gb DDR2/DDR3 depending on the CPU that supports.
