Does it matter what Ethernet cable i get?

I need a cable thats about 8m long , since my ISP only gives a 1m cable, so ill have to wait till monday to use internet :(

is it fine if i just buy a random 8m cable?

Try get a Cat 5, Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable, but that's about it.

dont bother with cat5.

cat5e is the thing to look for.

go to a local hardware/DIY store, chances are they have pretty decent ethernet cables of all the sizes you could want.

Just go for CAT5e. It's cheap and more than you'll need really. CAT6 and CAT7 can provide theoretical speed improvements, but only if you have connections that actually support and utilise those speeds (which, if you're asking this question, you probably don't).

alright

so CAT 5e = 6e?

so... CAT5e > CAT 6?

cat5e is the most widely used standard today.

cat6 is a higher standard, mostly for gigabit over longer distances.

cat6e is made up by manufacturers to overprice crappy cables.

No. Basically, higher numbers are "better" and the e version is "better" than the same number non-e version.

However, It would be CAT 5 > CAT 5e > CAT 6 and so on. In your case, it doesn't matter if you go for CAT 5e or CAT 6 or above though.
