I wouldn't say it is unless you really need some extra power or you are going to be looking to overclock it to the max.

dat single core performance;

yeah but that pci lane performance of x99.....

Im in the battle to chose from x99 and z170, with the addittional PCI lanes on the x99 i know i can add a intel 750, and sli/cross fire in the future.  with the z170 i can but the 750 on m.2 and get nearly the performance and still sli, but then  what about the next new cool pci card....

well... i never liked SLI (if i get a second gpu, it'll be for virtualization) and hard drives suffice for me, the only reason i have a boot ssd is because the seek times were breaking windows for me...

if they only want the extra single core performance than the i5 would be the better option.

well... i need "the total package" of the best single core performance i can get, combined with as much overall performance i can get.

my chrome tabs sometimes take up as much as 80% load on my i7 4790k (blame flash for that) combined with that i like to play minecraft from time to time, and sometimes even my 4790k has issues dealing with that one xD

the 5820K is a better option then. its either 5-10% more single core performance or 30-40% more multi threaded performance. i know which i would choose when they are practically the same price.

well... you should play modded minecraft once then, you'll understand my point xD

but yes, very much a niche market.

PS: skylake also has less heat output, which to some people is a big selling point.

But seriously, my dad's 4790k can handle 60+ chrome tabs with Minecraft, safari, and steam running in the background

What's up with yours? xD

well... flash... and twitch's implementation of it xD

that said, when you get to the point of having 100+ minecraft mods, expect one core to be cranked to the max at all times xD
