Is it better to get the XFX R9 280X Black Edition Double Dissipation 3GB better or the XFX R9 380 Double Dissipation? Both cost 200 dollars, but the 280x is black edition, so it is preoverclocked to 1.05 GHZ, and is voltage unlocked.

380 - XFX 280X has very warm VRMs  so that's a thing
380 also runs cooler and thus quieter - has 1 extra GB of memory and supports newer tech - Free-sync, True Audio and such. 380 also has compression algorithms comparable to Maxwell's and handles Tessellation worlds better.

The base version has 2GB, compared with the 280X's 3GB. Also its compression is more like Kepler, not Maxwell.

No, the 280X is a better chip. The 380 is the same chip as the 285.

380 OCs a lot better - the 280X from XFX has VRMs with temps of 80-90*C - that is a very limiting factor.

My 280x overclocked never goes past about 72° 

It's a Gigabyte, though.

Gigabyte were rock solid for R9 200. XFX failed then. With the R9 300 it's the other way around
