So,here is my question now that I've got my new laptop. If I use it for hours in the office do I need to leave the battery on the laptop? Is there any chance of hardware failure if the power cuts off?

I've been told that there actually is and that the battery works as a UPS in that situation.

No point in taking the battery off - when it's plugged in the battery idles and if it gets unplugged it takes over.

It does help saving the battery life, but thats about it!

For a better explanation, a battery has only got a ceratin amount of "Cycles" and however that number is very very high, all bits do tend to help

Think of a battery like a dek, it goes in the slot and is only ever removed in dire situations.  Yes it would probably cause some sort of damage because it's a sudden shutdown and your drives would have to repair in addition to a high probability of loss of data.
