Phone reception

Just moved to a new house and I barely get any signal. 1 (3G) bar at most. The strange thing is that putting the phone outside the windows gives me 4 (4g) bars and placing the phone 2 meters from the windows, onto the table gives the same 1 bar or sometimes nothing. I have never seen such a decreases in reception so first thing came to my mind is one of those signal suppressors like they use them in some supermarkets. Is it a possible cause and any suggestions on how to improve the signal?

you could get a signal repeater
