Hey guys, i didnt know where to post this so i figured off topic. So my house currently has a security system which has been in for about 3-4 years, 8 cameras in total. Id like to upgrade and possibly build my own server for it but i dont really know how to go about it. Any thoughts?

You don't need very high power hardware, so I would spend the majority of your budget on drives and cooling for those drives.

It is going to be a lot of hassle, so if you're willing to do it and fork out the money then do it.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Most of the hard stuff is in the software. Easy to build  a server but hard to get the software done. I built my freenas server in 3 hours but spent 3-4 weeks setting it up.

He already has a security system that manages them. I believe he just wants to make a storage server now.
