First Build Gaming/Streaming/Editing

Go to solution Solved by SeanAngelo,

Okay thank you, I'll save myself some money and go the 5820 and EVGA 980 ti superclocked 2.0 then. Just one more question. If I decide at some point to go dual sli will 850W be enough and am I better off buying a 980 ti reference card?

edit: Also, above when I asked about multi-tasking what I mean was running multiple programs at once.

850W will be enough. The 5820k will handle that easily. And don't get the reference, get the EVGA like you mentioned.

Hi all,

Frist time posting here. I'm looking to build my first rig for gaming, streaming and some video editing. I've compiled a components list and I was hoping I could get some feedback on my selections. I struggled to decide on a few parts of the hardware, mostly the ram and also whether or not I should use a 1151 motherboard.

Any way here's my list and any criticism good or bad would be appreciated.

cpu: i7 5960X Extreme Edition
cpu cooler: Fractal Design S36
modo: Asus X99-Deluxe/U3.1
gpu: EVGA Geforce GTX Titan X Superclocked 12GB
memory: G.Skill 4 2800 32GB (4x8)
storage: Samsung 850 Pro Series 1TB SSD
storage: Western Digintal Black 2TB
psu: EVGA 850W
monitor: Acer Predator XB270HU
case: Enthoo Pro
keyboard:  CM Storm Quickfire Rapid-i

Thanks.

you're spending a heckie lot of money on this build thats for sure, maybe you can go for a 5820K + 980ti and save about 500-750$ And still get great performance :3.

How "Heavy" is the video editing?
Because you can save more money by going to i7-4790K/i7-6700K instead, they're good as well.

I did originally have the 980 Ti but I really like the way the Titan X looks. It's all black and badass looking with it's green glowing geforce logo (probably the worst reason to choose a gpu I know). As for the cpu my first pickwas the i7 4960k. I have a bad habbit of starting cheap and slowly getting more expensive until I have the more expensive items on the market.

Hmm I'm not sure how heavy. It's only something I'm considering at the moment and I didn't want to limited in case I did decided to. More than likely I'd be editing game recordings to go on Youtube.

first, welcome to the forum

now, this is a beast machine, nothing bad to say about it, but I don't think that you need that much power.

I am going to tell you some modifications which will reduce the power of this machine with about 5-10% but it would cost  at least $800 less than your curent build. with that money you could get a nice ultrabook to carry around with you when you don't have this monster of pc( <3) around

change from the i7 5960x to an i7 5820k. you still get 6 cores and hyperthreading but it costs $600 less than the 5960x

and with the watercooler  you got there, you could oc your cpu quite a bit

now, regarding the gpu, i don't think that you really need a titan x. here i'd recommend a 980ti. get one with an msi or gigabyte aftermarket cooler and by oc-ing it you'll get the same performance as a titan x in games

don;t get a wd black hdd because they're very loud and it would be a shame. instead, get a seagate drive or a wd blue which will offer the same performance but they will be more quiet

don't use skylake. if you're gonna stream and render videos, the 5820k will be better suited than the 6700k

and regarding the ram, get a kit that looks good for you and doesnt cost that much, because ram performs the same no matter it's price

if you have any other questions just quote me :)

i7-4790K/6700K would do fine for you. If you still want to go with X99 system, then you can go with i7-5820K instead, you get 6 cores hyper-threaded CPU that still can do your job pretty much easily.

Thanks a lot for your  response. I do have one question in regards to ram. what difference does it make going with 2400, 2666, 2800 or even 3000?

The cores will make a difference while rendering; but its not super cost efficient (though it is worth it if you are earning money off your video work). A 5820K will save you a ton of cash but will be about 33% slower than the 5960X for rendering.

Don't go i7 on mainstream, stay with the 5820K and overclock it. Socket 115x is for i5s :). The 5820K is only marginaly more expensive than a 6700K or 4790K and gives you 50% improvement in rendering.

RAM Speed makes next to no difference. Just get a good quality 2400Mhz kit and dont care :).

I would probably drop the titan X and get 2x 980Ti for almost the same money.

It's just the frequency, higher RAM frequency makes it faster but the performance increase is hardly noticeable.

Get better CPU instead, you'll see noticeable performance increase.

the only place where ram frequency counts is when running an apu with the integrated graphics

in any other case(like in your case) it won't matter. in the worst case you'd see a 1fps drop from going with a 2400mhz ram kit against a 3200mhz kit for example

and as (almost) everyone said, don't get a normal i7 because it would be sad to know that you could make his awesome build witth a 5820k 980ti, 1tb ssd but instead to get a 4790k or a 6700k :(

You guys are very helpful. How much difference in performance is there between the 5820k and the i7 4790k?

A lot, but for gaming the performance is almost the same. But overall 5820K is better.

Don't get reference, get EVGA one like the one you mentioned, that GPU is great.

Yeah, that CPU will handle it without breaking a sweat.
