Best solution for consistent fast boot ups

I have a 120Gb Samsung 840 now, i would like to be able to boot up as fast as a fresh installation of windows on a new SSD. Should i get a 840 Pro 256Gb for OS+softwares and some games or i should use a 840 Pro 256Gb for OS+important softwares and the 120Gb for games?

 

Open to other ideas too, thank peeps!

SSDs don't work like mechanical drives, you can have 1mb free and it will still be as fast as if you just installed windows. I've been using the same SSD for over a year and it still boots up just as fast as the first time.

Also, the pro is marginally faster than the regular 840.

You won't be able to tell the difference.

The less applications it has to load at first the better I guess. Put your computer to sleep during the day if you know you will use it later and turn off over night?

erm, i used the Vertex 4, 840 Pro 128Gb and 840 120Gb. they all have the same results.

You should have os + all programs on a SSD.

You should have music, movies, data etc on a HDD

Games can go both way.

2 ssd in raid 0 will help, but the problem you are talking about (that the boot is slower after installing a lot of application) has nothing to do with your ssd.

A fresh install would be quicker as it only has to load windows.

 

Once you install something that requires a startup process, whether it be on an SSD or HDD it will slow down your boot. Even a custom desktop background will slow it down slightly.

 

I don't think another SSD would completely solve it, as you could be saturating the SATA interface.

but 128Gb 840 Pro in raid means abt 1Gb read and 600mb write speeds.

 

compared to 1 256Gb 840 Pro which has 540/520mb speeds..

i'm guessing the reason why my SSD slowed down so quickly is because i have filled it up past the half-way mark. like i've used 80Gb out of 120Gb..

The less stuff your pc has in the start up folder the better, so if you have skype and razercomms and steam,orgin all this stuff starting up when you start up your pc, than its going to be slow as shit!

If you can afford it buy a new 120 gb 840 and make a raid 0. Install ALL os and programs in this raid.

Well you have a 120 gb 840 now and you want to make a raid0. That's why another 120gb 840. Don't let the read and write speed guide your choice to much. Read and Write are the least important in a SSD.

I currently have a 840 120Gb and a WD Blue 1TB(need to RMA but disregard it for now).

But if you want the fastest boot time and the snappiest feeling in Windows you need raid 0, so then you should get one more 120 GB 840, not 2x 128 gb 840pro.

 

Regardless of your choice, be careful of what you install on your windows. Only install programs you need. Every program will make your computer a little bit slower

To be safe it is best to raid 2 identical drives. So 2 120 gb or 2 256 GB Pro etc. Don't mix them.

I don't know exactly what you mean, so i give some general advice

 

1. Use the same model and size then doing a raid 0

2. 840 is a great SSD, 840 pro even better but not worth the extra money for a consumer

3. 840 evo is replacing the 840 and are a little better.

4. Don't know witch of the 840 pro and 840 evo is the fastest, but the 840 evo is cheaper

 

As for Windows 8. It is personal if you like it (I DON´T). For gaming it is about the same as Windows 7

Let me tell you this: the reason Windows boots slower is because you load it with garbage applications that need to load on boot. RAID0ing your SSD with another won't make a difference. I'm using two SSDs in RAID0 right now, and let me tell you: it was a mistake. It doesn't do a whole lot to your boot time and because the RAID controller now has to initialise, my POST times are like 3 seconds longer.

 

What you should do is disable startup applications.

 

In Windows 8:

• Open task manager
• Go to tab start-up
• Right click on anything you don't need to load on start-up (basically almost everything) and click 'disable'

In any older version of Windows:

• Press ctrl+R
• type in msconfig
• Press OK
• Go to startup
• Disablie anything you don't need at boot

i already did that before i posted. i can't think of other solutions hence i made this thread. i only have 8 applications that run on start, none of which are garbage for that matter.

 

and by ur logic, i'm guessing i should buy a a drive such that i would never cross the half way mark. like a 256Gb and not use more than 128Gb; since filling up SSD's slow it down.
