I'm helping build a computer for a friend, and I could really use some advice on which specs to look at for a video editing and gaming computer. I know Processor is important, but which aspects impact smooth game performance and quick video rendering time are unknown to me. what should I look at, spec-wise?

What is your friends budget? I have a bunch of pre-designed gaming / video editing builds.

Well if gaming and editing video are his main focus then you're going to want to go for an i5-4460 and a GTX 970. Here's an example build.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WpsPBm <----- That's about as good as you're going to get towards the top of that budget.

There's no reason to put a SSD in a build this small, the money saved could go towards getting a better GPU.

Why do you NEED a server case? It's gonna end up costing you a lot more, resulting in less performance else where.

gotta save what space we can. four gamers in 600 some-odd square feet is cramped to say the least. also, server chassis being my insistence means it's not gonna be considered in her budget.

You can always move your system into a server rack down the road, however it's better the focus the money towards performance now.
