watercooling is for the enthusiast, if you care about pure performance, go with an AiO, if you actually view it as a hobby and enjoy building it and that stuff, that's what watercooling is about, don't go into thinking it's all about performance, it takes a lot to maintain and is a hassle more than it is beneficial. Air cooling is very simple and is just plug in play.
the rad is where the cooling takes place, water goes through and get cooled by the air, it's a necessary component of watercooling just like the CPU block and the pump

You would need watercooling for one or more of the following reasons:

-Looks

-Sound

-Cooling performance (higher overclocks)

Those perks come with a higher price premium and more maintenance.

Thank you for the detailed response. Like I said I don't plan on going crazy with the overclocking. This will be my first build and for now I don't believe I'd have the need to use water. Thanks again :)

and to answer your question directly, the Hyper 212 will do you good for some decent overclocks, you want there is higher end stuff out there, but for something mild like 4.2-4.4, it will do ya good

4.2 is exactly where I wanted to take it. Seems like a safe bet for a newb like me.

I don't like the more maintenance part. Looks doesn't really bother me. I could have a case with no windows and be happy. Sound with air cooling I don't think would bother me also. As long as the power supply was quiet I'd be a happy camper.

I'm assuming you're talking about the 3570k, 3770k, 4670k, or 4770k.

If so, you can reach 4.2 ghz on a stock cooler unless you have bad case airflow and/or a bad chip.

I'd still recommend the Hyper 212 Evo though--great cooler.

it will, on good chips, you don't even have to change the voltage much

unlike mine ;__;

I have a very detailed ram overclock video on my favorites on YouTube. Using an Asrock motherboard. Really simple. I would hate to blow something up on my first build

yeah, my build in my sig was my first build, trust me, watching a couple videos, and seeing what people have done with the same mobo and cooler and cpu, you can get a good estimate at where to start, and to increment from there

yes sorry. I'm gonna be using 3570k. I heard stock coolers were okay but I've also heard bad things when overclocking. Other than the 212 evo, what else would you recommend? Without going over $50 if you could.

Maintenance isn't too bad, it's quite a bit of work the first time but then you're set for like 6+ months, however it's considerably more work than just having a normal air cooler.

Since it's your first build you definitely shouldn't be water cooling yet, simply putting together the PC will be enough of an adventure for you. Then maybe you could transfer over to an AIO water cooler if you want to sample the 'greatness'.

I'd love that. I just want to start off small for now. My overall goal is just a basic computer for somewhat decent graphics and game play and then a crazy computer when the money situation is right. I just need experience putting everything together and fiddling with parts before I go overboard.

Unless you're going $50 or above, you're not getting much better than the Hyper 212 Evo.

It's a great cooler and you can get up to a 4.5 ghz OC on it depending on your chip.

Remember that overclocking for most people is a luxury and isn't really price/performance oriented.

to be honest, I've always found overclocking to be very scary and I've always avoided it. My friends would do it all the time but I always steered away from it. I know nothing about it but when I do it I'm just going to go with a very safe overclock. My chip will be 3570k.

An easy one is just to get 4.2 ghz and see how low you can push the voltage. Don't forget to turn off power saving features.

This might help:

Overclocking is relatively easier and safer nowadays.
