A few questions...

Go to solution Solved by helping,

You can maybe try something like this:

Use your cooler in push pull, with the rear fan pushing air in, you should have some air moving over MB VRM and alleviate too much negative pressure at the same time.

Hi all,

So I'm going to be purchasing a Corsair Air 540 very shortly and I had a few questions about fan setup etc and was hoping someone could help me :) So, here we go:

1. In the Air 540 there is a maximum of 6 fan mounting positions, two at top (140mm), one at back (140mm) and 3 in the front (120mm). If I set the two at the top and the back as exhausts and the three in the front as intakes would that give me good temps because I know most people either have positive or negative air pressure but this would be an equal amount of intake and outage fans so would that have a positive or negative effect?

2. The front of the case with the three fan mounts has a dust filter and I was just wondering if that would restrict airflow enough that I would need to buy static pressure optimised fans instead of airflow optimised fans or would I be ok with just the airflow fans?

Thanks in Advance,

Paul.

The filters shouldn't be big enough an obstruction to need SP fans. You will have a net negative case pressure unless you keep the 140mm's on lower voltage than the 120's. Negative is, in my opinion, less desirable than positive, but it's really not that big of a deal, you'll be fine.

are you using air cooling, AIO, or custom loop?

just a little thing to consider you will have negative air pressure since three 140mms will most likely move more air out than three 120mms will move in

Having more negative can be detrimental. It'll cause your computer to become more of a vacuum, sucking in more dust through various small openings in your computer.

Oh, I think there might be an misunderstanding here. I am using air cooling for my system not water cooling it. Sorey for the confusion :)

Huh? Each arrow represents a fan blowing. That big red box is your CPU heatsink.

Sorry, I derped for a minute there and thought you were talking about water coolers because you said push/pull. Sorry about that but yeh so you think that would be a better setup than the one I originally mentioned in my post?

Yea, it should avoid you having negative pressure, and all your heat is going to be pushed to the top where it would naturally go anyway.

Great! You've been a big help thank you! Oh and one thing I forgot to mention at the very start is that the 140mm fans spin at 1150RPM whereas the 120mm fans spin at 1650RPM. Does this change anything at all?

Not really. Larger fans tend to spin at lower RPM while maintaining higher CFM and lower noise compared to smaller fans. You'd have to compare each fans' CFM and total up your intake and exhausts to make sure that intake totals more than exhaust. Static pressure shouldn't be took big of a factor since you're not using any radiators.

You probably aren't going to be running those fans at those RPM's. With the three 120mm's in the front and a single 140mm in the rear as intake you should be good.

Just remember to get a dust filter for the back if you're using it as an intake silverstone do magnetic fan filters for a few pounds

Well that's that settled then. You've been a huge help. Thanks! :D
