My current system is

Asus Sabertooth X58

I7-980 Gufltown 6 core 3.33 Ghz

24 gb Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600

2x GTX 560TI SLI

My current graphics cards are starting to fail. That being said I am looking at upgrading graphics card to a Asus Strix GTX 980 TI. The big thing I am wondering is if it is worth doing since I have an older system and would it be better just to upgrade my hole chipset?

It would technically be better to update your entire PC however if the only thing holding you back is your GPU then just upgrade the GPU now and wait until later to upgrade the rest.

what are you looking to do with this machine?

Assuming gaming what are your performance goals (60hz, 120hz 144hz? -- screen resolution 1080p, 1440p 4K?)

What kind of games to you play the most?

Other than the graphic card, there's no real pressing need to upgrade the rest. Blame AMD for that. They just aren't competing, so Intel has been taking it slow in the last few years. If you want a bit more performances, just overclock the CPU to 4Ghz or something. Because it won't bottleneck a 980ti.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Bazzite
