Ping spikes

Go to solution Solved by arronleeds,

Cool :D

Yeah they're putting in fiber optic around my area, maybe that's why too?

Anything I should do other than wait for fiber optic and telling my family to not download etc while I play?

Thanks again man, really appreciate it :)

that could be why yes mate, they might be disrupting currently laid cabling, and thats about it my friend, no point doing things like upgrading router as you only currently have 8 meg.

Hello,

I'm having lag spikes that go from 100 ping to around 200 give or take.

Here's 2 tracerts to Google, one during non lag spike and one during a spike (i'm not sure how to identify the problem, I've also blocked some ips as i'm not sure if it's sensitive information)

Normal: https://gyazo.com/2a0e123a9d776a6036b0cf8d8672e6e3

Lag spike: https://gyazo.com/fe10fb89a6c05de0fe7bbe7d7df825b2

                 https://gyazo.com/b0e05e27e5330134a0705cffe3dec637

Hopefully someone can identify the problem... it's been going on for months now and it's bloody annoying.

Thanks in advance :)

you shouldnt use tracert to test ping spikes, you should use the ping command for that.

preferably to a server that doesnt mind you pinging them for hours on end.

First off thanks for the quick response.

I've used ping google.com -t for 5 minutes in CMD and most are the pings are on 50ms but they sometimes rise to from 160 to 300ms.

Black ops 3 BETA: I play on 100ms for a bit and then the ping shoots up through the roof to 300 and back down again.

WOW: Same thing here, I will be playing on 100ms for a while and it would rise up to a high latency.

I'm not really sure what to do, i've phoned my ISP and they say my line is fine but idk...

Thanks again

try doing the same again, but instead of pinging to google, ping your own router.

the issue may be on your LAN somewhere.

I've pinged my router (192.168.1.1 I believe) and each response is 1-5 ms mostly 1, the responses that are 5ms are every so often.

A few months back it was on 30ms or so, since then it has gone down but i'm still having lag spikes.

Thanks

yes you should.... a traceroute will show where the issue is, within the first 8 hops is the network, so if the ping is high within the first 8 its the provider, if its high after the 8th hop its due to downloading etc.

looking at your traceroute it seems that maybe your isp is having some issues ie congestion that is due to network overload (too many customers and not enough bandwidth) contact them and tell them whats going on.

is this at certain times?

No :/ The spikes are normally all day. Today I turned told everyone to get off the internet for a bit to see if it lags and it didn't.

My brother played CSGO and we spoke on skype and it lagged, I told him to get off a sec and it stopped.

Then the same thing happened later on but I wasn't lagging...

I'm so confused lol

Anything I should leave on overnight to check ping and where it occurs etc?

Thanks

The traceroute showed bad ping on all hops, it looks like its ISP related but also home related (too much bandwidth been used), what is your download and upload speed?

Looking at your traceroute when it's not lagging it still looks like your hops are too high, why do you have such bad ping is what's bugging me, 50-60s is bad this day and age. What provider are you with.

Download speed: 10mbps

Upload: 1mbps

I didn't even know 100 was bad, it seems that the connections are just bad, i'm with an ISP called Telefonica. Everywhere i've been on the internet has had 100 ping or more when I played games.

100ms is 1/10th of a second, most people can't notice it but I can, especially in cs:go, your download speed isn't that bad at all, best thing you can do is monitor it using something free from the Internet, write down the times when people are on and off the iternet and match up the lag to when people are using it.

Also when you're lagging, do a speedtest and see what that shows, someone In our house has a tablet and its a shitty one and because the wireless on it is bad, it hogs over 80% of my speed when he downloads on it.

Edit- do people in your house upload during the day? Your upload speed isn't that great and once someone starts uploading you will get bad lag.

Nobody uploads that I know of, I asked a friend what ping he gets and he says 60 in the best matches and 150 in the worst and he doesn't live too far away from me. That's probably the better latency i'm guessing :P

I'll do a speedtest now as it's not lagging then post one when it is. I've noticed it says 55ms but ingames I have 120 normally :/ I guess because it's connecting to the best server avaliable?

you live in spain :D my friend lives in spain too and his connection is around the same as yours. atm there are people in his area adding fibre to the network which may be causing his lag spikes as they may be disrupting other cables. if your ping is 55ms to speedtest dont worry about it, its hardly ever correct. the reason you will get such high ping in games is because the servers will be far away depending on who you play with and where they live.

my diagnostic is that your isp isnt that brilliant even though your speeds are ok and that there will be too many people hogging the internet. try to make sure people dont download things while you play, just explain the situation and ask them to download when youre not online.

the problem isnt congestion as it would only be peak times that it lags (weekdays 6pm-12pm and weekends mostly all day)
