I'd say 290X assuming that you are using a FHD monitor.

k thanks, also is it worth upgrading to skylake if you get ddr4?

No, skylake barely offers anything from Devil's canyon (Haswell LGA 1150)

DDR4 is pretty much apples to apples to DDR3 because DDR3 has lower latency (CAS) than DDR4. Speeds don't matter

Don't. The 390 is a rebranded 290. It's a step down from what you have.

Edit: Wait how are you "sticking with" anything if it's your first PC?

Could mean he plans on getting the 290x but now hes reconsidering it and wondering if he should just stick with the 290x but yeah ussualy youd assume he has it and if thats the case theres no reason to spend that much money on a 390

It's not a step down. It outperforms the 290X in some games, most actually.

Only because they overclocked it. You're still comparing a fully unlocked hawaii core with one with stream processors disabled. Overclock the 290X to match the 390 stock and it will beat it.

It would be like if there was a 970 that was binned and came factory overclocked to 1600MHz so that it beat a stock 980, can you really call it a better card than the 980? Overclock a decent 980 and it wins again.
