I am planning a rig for my friend with an asus rampage iv gene and a i7 4820k my question is would there be any compatability issues with ivy bridge-e in a motherboard designed for sandybridge-e I know x79 motherboards can handle ivy bridge-e with a bios update but some people say to update the bios you need an extra sandybridge-e cpu is that true and will I need to update the bios on the gene?

I suppose the last part of your post is your answer, I can't see any other way of working unless it boots with the 4820K and you have a USB with the update.

Will it boot into the bios to let me update it?

I don't know I said if it does then try and have an update USB ready if you are buying the motherboard then it is possible that it already is updated.
