Network problem xp

Go to solution Solved by alexnt,

Cleaning the infections and upgrading/reinstalling firefox solved the problem.

Another problem I faced today at work is the following.

There is a windows xp pro machine that it can connect to internet but when you try to run a browser(ff or ie) the first one gives the error xp sound without any message and the second opens but after 2-3 sec closes. I checked in task manager if firefox is still open in background but it wasn't. The internet options in control panel never opens when you click it, also. I scanned with mbam, spybot and adw and I found out that it was heavily infected. I clean it and cleaned the registry as well. The result was the same. I forgot to mention that for every prog I mentioned above could update normally to latest definitions. I decided to run sfc /scannow to check if windows filesystem was corrupted. And then it gave me the 0x000006ba error rpc server unavailable. I tried this solution but nothing was fixed. Because I could not open internet options I did another search and found this but the problem persisted.

I believe that filesystem is messed up and the only solution is to reinstall windows.

Any other suggestions to try????

First question, without detail, if your workplace has a secured network, is this YOUR business or a business you work for? If you work for a business, it won't let you view your internet options because it is blocked for everyone else, unless your IT professional himself/herself grants you with administrator control (often the administrator control lasts for about 15 minutes-30 minutes). I have my CCNA and do professional network management- speaking from a corporate/enterprise level, it seems like you are not the owner of the machine, and therefore a designated  IT tech manages your systems at your work, right?

It is not my workstation. I work for a tech shop as a technician and the owner of the system talking about, brought it to repair it. He said that it could not connect to the internet. I noticed that it could but no browser opened. No other system had this issue with "internet options" not opening at my workplace so far.
